Under the hood lies a robust 108 cu in (1.8 L) V4 engine, known for its high torque output at low speeds, which is paired with a four-speed manual transmission that includes a unique transfer case, providing eight forward speeds and two in reverse. The transfer case is part of the transmission and disconnects the front wheels, allowing for on-the-fly shifting into 4WD—a revelation not found on early 1/4-ton military vehicles but continued with the related M151 and its successors.
